Why is my trade website not getting enquiries?
Quick answer: A trade website that gets visitors but no enquiries usually fails at one of five steps: it isn't found, it loads slowly on mobile, it doesn't look trustworthy, the phone number or quote form is hard to find, or calls go unanswered. Google found 53% of mobile visits are abandoned after three seconds (2016 research), and 69% of callers won't leave a voicemail (Moneypenny, 2016). Test each step in turn rather than redesigning blindly.
Is the problem traffic, trust or the contact route?
First work out where enquiries leak. A trade website has five steps, and each fails in a different way.
| Step | Symptom | How to test | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Found | Almost no visitors | Search your trade plus town; check Google Search Console for impressions | Google Business Profile, service and town pages, indexing fixes |
| 2. Loads | Visitors leave at once | Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile | Compress images, remove heavy sliders and plugins |
| 3. Trusted | Visitors scroll but don't act | Look for reviews, photos, accreditations above the fold | Add reviews, real photos, insurance and scheme badges |
| 4. Contactable | Visitors act but can't | Find your number and quote form in under 5 seconds on your phone | Sticky click-to-call, 3-field form |
| 5. Answered | Enquiries arrive, jobs don't | Count missed calls and reply times | Reply fast; automate a text back for missed calls |
Is your site too slow or unfriendly on a phone?
StatCounter figures put mobile at about 54% of UK web traffic, so a large share of your visitors are on a phone. Google's research found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes more than three seconds to load, and that as load time goes from one second to seven, the chance of a visitor leaving rises 113%. That study dates from 2016, but its thresholds still shape how Google measures page experience. Open your own site on mobile data. If you have to pinch to zoom or wait, fix that before anything else.
Is your phone number or quote form hard to find?
If a visitor has to scroll past three paragraphs or open a Contact page to find your number, many won't. Put a tap-to-call button and a short quote form in the first screen. Three fields (name and phone, postcode, job type) are enough to start the conversation.
Do you have enough trust signals?
In BrightLocal's 2026 US survey, 41% of consumers always read reviews, and 31% will only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the year before. Recent, specific reviews with a town and job type do more than a generic badge. Add photos of real jobs, your accreditation numbers (Gas Safe, NICEIC, NFRC or similar, where you hold them), insurance, and the towns you cover.
Are you losing enquiries after they arrive?
Many "no enquiries" problems are really missed-call problems. Moneypenny's 2016 report on British builders found that 69% of callers won't leave a voicemail. A j2 Global survey of UK consumers found 59% wouldn't leave a message on an unanswered call, and more than a third would ring the next business. If you are on a job when the phone rings, the customer has already moved on. A neutral text reply sent straight after a missed call keeps the conversation alive, and it is legal in the UK when done properly.
How do you measure whether the site is working?
Divide enquiries (calls, form submissions, messages) by visits to get your conversion rate. We don't quote a "good" benchmark because rates vary widely by trade, area and traffic source. Track it monthly, and compare your Google Business Profile calls against website calls to see which channel is carrying the load.
Related questions
Why does my website get traffic but no calls?
Usually the contact route or trust is the problem. Check that a tap-to-call button and a short quote form appear on the first screen of a phone, and that reviews, real photos and accreditations are visible.
Why isn't my trade website showing on Google?
New sites can take weeks to be indexed. Check Google Search Console for indexing errors, make sure each service and town has its own page, and set up your Google Business Profile, which drives most Maps visibility.
How many enquiries should a trade website get?
There is no reliable universal benchmark, because it depends on trade, area and traffic source. Measure your own conversion rate (enquiries divided by visits) and improve it month by month.
Does a Wix site get fewer enquiries?
Not because of the platform. Wix sites that are slow, image-heavy or thin on content underperform, but a well-built Wix site can convert — our Joel Removals site is a custom Wix build.
