How do I optimise my Google Business Profile as a tradesman?
Quick answer: Choose the most specific primary category for your trade, enter your real business name only, set your service areas, select your services, add real photos, and ask every customer for a review. Whitespark's 2026 survey puts profile signals at 32% of local pack weighting, reviews at 20% and website signals at 15%, so the profile matters most, but reviews and your website still count.
How much does your Google Business Profile matter for ranking?
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey is the industry's main expert benchmark. For the local pack (the three businesses shown on the map), it weights the main factor groups as follows, as summarised by Advice Local and others:
| Factor group | Share of local pack weighting (2026) |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile signals | 32% |
| Review signals | 20% |
| On-page (website) signals | 15% |
Reviews are the second-largest group, not the first, and Whitespark's founder ranks review recency among his top five factors. Predefined services selected on the profile also entered the 2026 list at number 22. Three of the top five factors for AI search visibility relate to citations, so consistent listings help you appear in AI answers too.
What should you fill in on a trade Google Business Profile?
| Field | What to enter | Trade example |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Your real-world trading name only, no keywords added | Joe's Plumbing and Heating |
| Primary category | The most specific category in Google's list. Search the picker for your trade | Plumber, Electrician, Roofing contractor |
| Secondary categories | Only genuine extra services | Heating contractor, Bathroom remodeler |
| Service areas | Towns and postcodes you really cover | Up to the limit Google allows |
| Address | If you work from home and customers don't visit, hide it and use service areas | Service-area business setting |
| Services | Select predefined services, then add your own with prices or ranges | Boiler repair, drain unblocking, EICR |
| Photos | Real vans, uniforms, completed jobs, before and after | Add new ones monthly |
| Hours | Accurate hours, plus special hours for bank holidays | Mark 24-hour call-outs only if true |
| Website link | The page that best matches the profile | Home page or the service page |
How does NAP consistency work?
NAP means name, address, phone number. Citations (your listing on Yell, Checkatrade, Facebook and similar) should match your profile exactly. If Facebook says "Joe's Removals" and your website says "Joe's Removals Ltd", pick the version that matches your signage and invoices and use it everywhere. Google's guidelines say the profile name should reflect your real-world name, so don't add keywords or town names to it.
How do you get more Google reviews?
In BrightLocal's 2026 US survey, 31% of consumers will only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher (17% a year earlier), and 41% always read reviews. After each job, send the customer your direct review link from the profile dashboard, and reply to every review, good or bad. Google's policies prohibit paying for reviews or offering incentives, and prohibit filtering requests so only happy customers are asked. Aim for steady, recent reviews that mention the job and town, rather than a burst once a year.
One compliance point: the ICO has treated some review and feedback requests as direct marketing, so ask in person or at job completion, and honour opt-outs. Our guide to PECR and texting customers explains the difference between service messages and marketing.
What should you do weekly and monthly?
| Frequency | Task |
|---|---|
| After every job | Send the review link; reply to new reviews within a day or two |
| Weekly | Upload one or two real job photos; check missed calls and messages |
| Monthly | Check Performance in the dashboard (calls, direction requests, searches); review services and areas |
| Quarterly | Audit citations for name, address and phone consistency; check competitors' review counts in your top three |
When we managed this process for Joel Removals, replying to reviews consistently and keeping the profile updated with fresh photos improved our local visibility.

Create and verify a Google Business Profile with your trade as the primary category, your real name, phone number and service areas. Verification is required before it shows publicly.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a shop or office?
Yes. Set it up as a service-area business and hide your home address, as Google's guidelines allow when customers don't visit you.
How many Google reviews does a tradesman need?
There is no magic number. Compare your count and rating with the top three businesses showing for your trade and town. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 31% of consumers only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher.
Does my website affect my Google Business Profile ranking?
Yes, indirectly. On-page signals make up about 15% of local pack weighting in Whitespark's 2026 survey, so a site with your services and towns helps.
